Windows 8 Official release date is October 26th. There will be no “Retail” version. It will be bundled with a new device, or be offered as an upgrade.  For Windows 8, all currently supported versions of Windows qualify for the upgrade. So - all customers qualify for an upgrade version of Windows 8.

The “Surface” tablet running Windows 8 will release at the same time.
A new line of Window 8 Phones will also be available.

Windows 8 is designed to work with touch screens, and to provide the same interface across the desktop, tablet devices and smart phones.  There will be a version designed to work on ARM processors for mobile devices which will likely not run traditional Windows software- just the new Windows 8 Apps.

Microsoft has redesigned the Windows Live websites and renamed them as Windows 8 Apps. Internet Explorer 10 will be included in Windows 8.

If you purchase Windows 7 now, you can get Windows 8 when it comes out for about $15 extra.

The first public preview of Office 2013 is out. It is heavily integrated with online services – Office 365 and SkyDrive, which is the default location for saving documents. The ribbon remains, but uses larger fonts to make it compatible with touch screens. The goal is to provide a similar experience across platforms – desktop, web, or mobile device. Word will import PDF files directly.  Real time collaboration (similar to Google docs or OneNote) is better supported. Server 2012 is still scheduled to release around the same time as Windows 8. Exchange and SharePoint will also have new versions coming out late this year.

Small Business server 2012 is now Windows Server 2012 Essentials - no more Small Business Server. Windows Server Essentials integrates with Office 365 which includes Exchange (email), SharePoint (web collaboration), and Lync (Microsoft’s IP Phone product) online.  The Essentials Server itself is very similar to Server 2012.

Windows Home Server will be discontinued.

As usual, there are updates for Java, Flash, Adobe Acrobat, and Firefox that should be installed.
Be sure to remove any older versions of Java from your computer. Some will need to be manually uninstalled from the control panel: “Add/Remove programs” in XP, or “Programs and Features” in Windows 7.

Neither Avast nor MSE did well in detecting new viruses, according to a November 2011 AV-Comparatives report (PDF).
MSE's detection rate was 48.7 percent, followed closely by Avast with 46.1 percent. (Qihoo earning the top score of 67.6 percent.)

Security tips for mobile devices
  • Lock your device with a PIN or swipe code
  • Turn off Wireless and Bluetooth in public places
  • Turn off GPS if you are not using it
  • Be careful of apps:
       Don’t download apps with less than 100K users (or so)
       Be aware of what permissions you grant, particularly apps that share social media (and their passwords)
        Keep your device and your apps updated. Updates often include security fixes.
  • Don’t store financial or sensitive personal data on your phone.
  • Back up your data.
  • If possible link your device to a server that can remotely wipe it if stolen.
