Windows 8 Released

Windows 8 was officially released on October 26th.  Windows 8 RT is a scaled down version designed for tablets, and will not run all Windows software. It does run Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote but no Outlook. Instead there is a new mail app.

The full Windows 8 (non-RT) is largely backward compatible with Windows 7 software.  Drivers may need to be upgraded, and some hardware will not work. The biggest change is the touch oriented interface, using squares on the screen.

Upgrades from any version of Windows will be $40.  People who bought Windows 7 PCs since June 2 can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15. It is not available standalone unless purchased with hardware.  Versions will be similar – Home, Professional and Enterprise. If you have questions about what the different versions visit the Windows 8 Versions wiki. A 90 day trial version is available for download on MSDN at the bottom of the page.

Windows 8 comes with Internet Explorer 10.  A “Preview” will be available in November for Windows 7. This version is supposed to fix many of the issues with Internet Explorer 9.

Here are some good reviews of Windows 8 from Ars Technica and Tech Radar.
