Office 2010
Technology with Integrity

By Tim Torian, Torian Group, Inc.

Office 2010 is now out.

Here’s what you need to know:

If you purchase an Office 2007 product after March 4th and before Sept 30th, you are eligible for a free upgrade to Office 2010. If you don’t have Office, you may want to purchase Office 2007 and get the free upgrade – the new version will cost slightly more. Go to: www.office.com/techg  to claim the upgrade.

If you are not within the “upgrade” time window, there will be no upgrade pricing. If you have an existing copy of Office you will need to buy the full version at the regular price.  For most people, this will not make sense. The new features are not compelling enough to justify a new purchase just to upgrade.

Office Web Applications is the online version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote that will run inside a browser to let you access and edit your documents from anywhere on the Internet. Collaboration allows multiple people to work on the same document online. Office Web Apps will feature the same interface that Office 2010 has. A free but more limited version of Office Web Apps will be a part of Windows Live, in a “documents” tab.

If you are considering a new purchase, take a close look at Google Apps before making your decision. Google Apps is entirely online, and well suited to startups, as you can work from anywhere you have an internet connection.
