Your Online Identity Minimize
Your Online Identity
Technology with Integrity

By Tim Torian, Torian Group, Inc.

If you are involved with business, you are on the internet. In addition to managing your credit, you now need to manage what information is on the internet about you and your business. It is up to you to make sure your online identity tells your story. Start by searching your name and your company name in the major search engines. It will likely surprise you if you have not done it before. If there is misinformation, see if you can correct it. Search Google.com; Yahoo.com; Bing.com and dmoz.org (Dmoz is the engine behind many search sites). Use variations and misspellings as well – any terms that might be used by people searching for information about you online. Search for your name in association with relevant terms – it sometimes brings up new results. If your business is using social media for marketing, be sure to check forums and other sites where people may respond to your postings
Sign up for social networking sites and reserve your name, even if you don’t plan to be active – make sure someone else doesn’t take your name in vain.

Include social media in your computer use policy – where is the line between business and personal when your employees post online? See examples here: http://socialmediagovernance.com/policies.php

Like your credit score, your online reputation has real financial impact. Take the time to protect it.
