Fireproof Backups
Technology with Integrity

By Tim Torian, Torian Group, Inc.

Computer backups are one of those things it is easy to overlook until you need it. The purpose of a backup it to protect you from disaster. The best approach to disaster prevention is to consider where your important data is, and all the bad things that could happen to it, and then figure out how to prevent or mitigate the risks. The biggest risks are usually failure of the computer storing the data, or loss through fire or theft. Traditionally, the main way to mitigate these risks has been by backing up to tape, then taking a backup tape offsite, often in a bank vault or other secure location. Times have changed. The preferred medium for backups is external hard drives – they are faster, less expensive, and can be taken offsite.
I recently came across a product which changes the backup game again. It is a fireproof and waterproof external hard drive. This greatly reduces the chances of data loss, without having to take it offsite. It even comes with a mounting hole so you can bolt it down, reducing the chances for theft as well.
It is the IOSafe drive: www.iosafe.com. It has been tested at over 1500 degrees, and is waterproof. Cost is about $300 for 1.5 TB of storage.
