Personal Success
Technology with Integrity

By Tim Torian, Torian Group, Inc.

The path to personal success is an open secret. Many people have studied success, and discovered the principles that work. They are simple. Here's my personal version of it:

1. Find out what you love to do, and figure out a way to make money doing it. You will only excel at something you enjoy, because only then will you put in the time and attention to become good at it.

2. Get clear about your values, and live by them. Set clear written goals, and review them daily. Associate with people who share your values.

3. Continually improve yourself - Read, listen to tapes, go to seminars. Learn in your chosen field.

4. Find out what works, and practice until you master it. Your life is largely a result of the habits and beliefs you have developed.

Why doesn't everybody do this? You have a mental comfort zone - when things get too bad, you take action to improve them. When they get too good, you take action to sabotage your success. To succeed more, you will have to do things you have never done before, and shift your comfort zone.

I believe passionately in the value of personal development and continuous learning, and it is a part of our business philosophy.

Here are some of my favorite business authors, which reflect the values we try to embody as a company:

Michael Gerber: the E-Myth, The E-Myth Manager

David Maister, Charles Green & Robert Galford - The trusted advisor

David Allen - Getting things done

Jim Collins - Good to Great

Larry Bossidy and Ram Charin - Execution, Confronting Reality

Henry Cloud - Integrity, the courage to meet the demands of reality

Daniel Goleman - Working with emotional intelligence

Michael Phillips Salli Rasberry - Honest Business  (out of print)

Steven Covey - 7 Habits of highly successful people, and everything else he does

Ken Blanchard - numerous books, all great.

Bo Burlingham - Small Giants

Jack Welch - All his books are good, and entertaining
